The flip-side of harmony
Contrary to the desire of orchestras to put on a public front of unity and harmony, the aim of the present article is to give an account of their divisions: First of all the objective divisions and hierarchies among the different instruments, those differences that can be seen on every public occasion and which corroborate the socially differentiated origins of the musicians. Secondly, the study endeavors to show that these social divisions and hierarchies are experienced and re-actualized by the players, and that they are at the root of the interactions between conductors and instrumentalists and, consequently, of the interpretation.

Musical Style, Meaning, and Politics on the Eve of the Second World War
This article concerns both how and why French music was pulled into the political-cultural battle between the Popular Front and its opponents in the later 1930s. It explores the way in which the new government used music as a political tool, as it became a major source of support for composers in a period of harsh economic depression. The Popular Front was able to recruit important French musicians and, it was through their roles in major musical institutions, as well as through their discourse, that they helped redefine aesthetic legitimacy. A major concern of the article is thus the sources of the musical values, models, and genres now being promoted and perceived as part of the new ideology: it demonstrates that its roots, as well as the political use of French musical culture, may be found in the period after the Dreyfus Affair, went Rightest leagues launched a ÇÊcultural warÊÈ. Similarly, it examines how the pro-fascist Right in France turned to the musical discourse originally developed by a member of the ÇÊLigue de la Patrie FranaiseÊÈ, Vincent dÕIndy. This ÇÊRomanticÊÈ discourse was propagated not only in the pro-fascist press, but in its supporting cultural organizations, which sponsored both concerts and lectures on music. Hence the article examines the major critics in pro-fascist journals, as well as analyzing their discourse and how it was diffused in the French musical press. Finally, it relates the shifting hegemony in French music in the later 1930s to the growing rejection of the political and cultural values of the Third Republic.

Beethoven and the Invention of Genius
Beethoven is typically portrayed as the quintessential genius of western culture and as a revolutionary of music. These portrayals underplay the ways in which his success and reputation as a genius among his contemporaries can be understood as a social, cultural und technological construction. This paper explores the social bases of BeethovenÕs success during his first decade and a half in Vienna. BeethovenÕs success was facilitated by changes in the social organization and cultural climate of musical patronage, by the supportive and practical activities of his close circle of aristocratic patrons, and by BeethovenÕs own efforts to renegotiate the musician-patron relationship at the turn of the nineteenth century. The expanding climate of receptivity to BeethovenÕs work became in turn a resource for the further development of BeethovenÕs own artistic projects and for the perceived idiosyncrasies of BeethovenÕs musical style.

Musical bounds of political choice
Grieg and Norwegian nationalism
At the age of twenty, having completed his studies in Schumanian School Leipzig, Edvard Grieg (1843-1906), went through an identity crisis, which he resolved by throwing himself into the movement to make Norway a sovereign State. From that moment on, his work was bound up with the folk music of the Norwegian valleys. But he encountered obstacles that he had trouble defining clearly (with a few noteworthy exceptions, he felt destined to write short ÇÊlyric piecesÊÈ, which gave him the impression of having just missed being a great composer).
The present essay attempts to situate Grieg in a cultural field strongly marked by German romantic philosophy, an organic conception of which he is an unwitting prisoner and which prevents him seeing another way, which would have better suited his musical tendencies, the school of Debussy ad the modernists that followed.

Orpheus wounded
The institutional field of the piano contains three social worlds - the virtuoso, pedagogical and medical worlds - each of which in its distinctive way produces, manages, or denies physical pain in piano playing. A number of ÇÊrisk factorsÊÈ combine to increase the production of pain among a significant number of professional pianists: increasing market competition, faulty technique (and inadequate teaching), expansion of the standard virtuoso repertoire. None of the social worlds of the piano have historically had to confront the problem of pain. The medical world blames pain on ÇÊmisuseÊÈ; the virtuoso world on lack of ÇÊgeniusÊÈ or ÇÊhard workÊÈ, the pedagogical world on ÇÊbad teachingÊÈ or ÇÊlack of talentÊÈ. The problem is probably exacerbated by the emotional commitment of young piano prodigies to their mother and their teacher, which leads to denial of pain or self-blame. The argument is based upon a survey of 268 New York State piano teachers, on interviews with doctors, piano teachers and pianists, on observation of piano pedagogy clinics and pedagogical conferences, and on a historical survey of handbooks on piano technique.
