Hilary putnam has written a book named 'Ethics without Ontology'. In one chapter he mentioned the issue "objectivity without object." Putnam's motivation is to justfy the objectivity and dignity of humanities in front of the natural science. Though his main concern is about ethics and moral science, I thingk you can derive the useful information from the book. Good Luck!
