Subject: [Puptcrit] puppet building with children

I am going to be working with some middle school aged children on building
some papier mache head rod puppets this winter. These puppets will
potentially be used for promotional purposes to "advertise" their
organization - in local parades, schools, and such.

We want to promote independence and independent thinking, and are against
traditional stereotypes, as well as promoting drug and chemical free living.

I'm thinking of "Bread and Puppet" style rod puppets, also got some ideas
from Nan Rump's (I think I recall her name right!) book about building
puppets with kids, with 2 kids each puppet. The work space has a low
ceiling, and this is a winter project, so I'm thinking max 5 or 6 feet each
puppet.

Any ideas or examples of puppets any of you have made with groups before,
or warnings of what not to do? I've experience with simpler puppets for
schools and scouts, but wanted to glean the list's knowledge/experience if
possible!

Thanks in advance and happy holidays to everyone!

Diane
