Subject: [Puptcrit] Re: Puppets and Politics

This list DOES deal with ideas, aspects and information about
puppetry. I think that when puppets are used to convey a message with
politics, religion, sex, or whatever, that the discussion is directly
related to the "how's and why's of puppets as in handling, performance
and building there of". However, I would agree the discussion should be
about those puppets and their use, not the political view expressed or
held. For instance, we can talk about the pro's and cons of Ax's Ronald
Reagan vent figure without discussing the politics and policies of
Reagan and whether or not we agree with them. A short opinion of
personal view that gives the reader an idea of where an extreme slam or
praise comes from is acceptable. A long rant or rave is less than
desirable, as one man's rant may be another man's rave and vise versa.
While I don't know that I agree exactly with your assertion of what
comprises art, I would say that a LWDCParty discussion ONLY fits under
your "FORM" and on this list if there are puppets (not counting any
people as political puppets) used in some way.
If this list were to ban all politics, even when related to puppets,
there would be no "Bread and Puppet", no Punch and Judy, and few of the
fairy and folk tales discussed in any way. I would agree that we
sometimes get off on a tangent and lose the original connection to
puppetry, but that is when the delete button comes in handy. No need to
run away and stick your head in the sand, just hit the big "D" and move
on. There is, after all, much more to this list than the occasional off
topic threads.
And let us not just say "Christian based" when we are talking about
Religious based, as there are puppets used in other religious ways -
Indian, Jewish, and so on. If you don't care for these discussions,
again, the delete button is your friend.
