I ran a big thing here in Georgia back in 1978 or 9 called "The World
Festival of the Yiddish Spirit" part of it was a wonderful company
called (if I remember right, I'm old) the American Jewish Theatre
Company that did wonderful plays dealing with the Hassidim and early
Yiddish traditions. We also had a wild, sort of esoteric puppetry group,
but I can't recall the name (I will try to find an old program) that did
fairly non-representative puppetry with fabric elements some made of
foam expressionistic wood elements that moved to music, and a moving
shape-shifting Star of David. I think they were from Eastern Europe,
Hungary, Romania(?). I wish I could be more helpful but the AJTC is
still around and if any of them are old enough to remember the Festival,
they might remember the name of the puppet group.

Richard B. Johnson, Husband, Father, Grandfather, Actor, Director,
Puppeteer, Playwright, Teacher,Writer, Thingmaker, Mormon, Person, Fool.
I sometimes think that the last persona is the most important- and most
valuable.

Actually I am interested in any information regarding Essene stories
and other texts uncovered by the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls.
Obviously I am attempting to address my considerable ignorance and
wondering if there is anyone working in puppetry that has looked into
the texts uncovered in the Scrolls.

I'm also interested in any stories, accounts, experiences that would
link puppetry to the 19th and 29th century American Yiddish theatre .
