If well defined and of appropriate proportions,  Simple holes can make great 
eyes.
Sometimes you'll need raised edges to emphasize. Sometimes paint will help 
deepen a hole.
But these type of eyes tend to look tortured or sad, in my short experience 
as a maker, and a spectator.

Haven't seen a perky-look yet from a holee-eye.
