The black marble works well, but I still favor gluing a black sequin (there
are large ones if you look hard enough) over whatever you use for the dark
center of the eye, cup side down. The facets of it catch the light
differently each time the puppet moves an iota, giving the illusion of life.
I learned that trick years ago from Frank Ballard and several other
established puppeteers. If the sequin is large enough, cutting a small pie
shaped wedge out of it before gluing it on strangely creates magic.
