A little pursuit reatored the name Gozzi to its place in memory-- an admirer
of the commedia dell'arte who retained the classic characters of that style,
but who also repudiated Goldoni's attempts to keep commedia alive for all time
in script form by scripting his own plays rather than leaving it in
traditional scenario form; Gozzi injected much of the fantastic into the pre-existing
tradition of commedia, thus producing theater much like Mozart's "Magic Flute."
This and the rise of sentimental theater were delightfully satirized by
Ludwig Tieck in "Puss in Boots." "Turandot" originates from Gozzi. Julie Taymor has
designed for one or two Gozzi theater pieces. I hesitate to call them comedy
or drama-- the have much the same problem in classification as Ben Jonson's
"Comedies" or Terence's.
Hey,
Alice
