Subject: Re: [Puptcrit] Puppet Eyes

Just a thought about Eyes that I thought I would pass

When I was building some large puppets for Jim Gamble
with Roger Mara, we came up with a nifty way of doing
eyes. We wanted something different from the usual
sequin or faceted button look that we had had with so
many of Jimís marionettes, but wanted the reflection
that adds so much life to eyes, so Roger took some of
those craft store google eyes, that have the pupil
that rolls around in them. You know the ones I mean
that have a clear dome, and a white backing? I had
always hated them, since they were the opposite of
focussed and controlled. Well Roger cut the back off,
removed the moving pupil, and back painted the clear
plastic with Testorís black spray paint. This gives
you a really glossy black pupil that catches the light
really well, and isnít so cartoony. We Then Epoxied (
or hot glued, or cyanoed, I canít remember) This pupil
onto a ping pong ball half, and with some foam eyelids
to shape the eye, we had a great look for the eyes of
our show ďTales of the AshantiĒ.

The advantages here are that it is pretty darn quick
and cheap, and works well in a theater setting.
