  I've not tried doing shadows outside myself.  But one issue is all the
ambient light.  This means the shadow part gets washed out from the light in
front.  One way to address this is to use a scrim in front of the shadow
screen.  This is simply a sheer black cloth, like chiffon.

  Another idea is to not put the stage under a shaded area, but rather in a
sun lit area with the sun hitting the back of the screen.  I imagine the
angles are going to be an issue, because you really don't want the sun in
the audience's eyes.  So, this may only be viable if the sun is high in the
