If this is the film I think it is from Evy's description, it reminds me 
that as a kid we had an illustrated book of this story with photographs 
of what were clearly 3D figures from an animated film. This book might 
be available through abe.com.

If so, your collector might also be interested in what I remember as 
another book (and therefore likely another film) of Andersen's "Seven 
Swans"
