How many maniuplators will you use? I was priviledged some years ago to sit
under the playing board at the Obraztsov Theater in Moscow while watching
"the Unusual Concert," Obraztsov's famous rod puppet orchestra using
"improvised" instruments from water closet, cat in the bag, etc. Although=20that was
before small video cameras were invented, I have a later video of the performance
(from the audience POV.) I purchased it in Zagreb last year at the O.
exhibit in conjunction with the PIF Festival. I was also given an earlier=20copy
when I performed at the O. Theatre in 2001.

It took a number of puppeteers...forgetting the exact number...but backstage
was a pianist accompanying, at least one puppeteer per puppet, with playing
board at shoulder height or higher. Everyone needed a neck massage following
the performance. I saw the program on tv back in the 50s, on the Ed Sullivan
Show. I also have slides I took from back stage....but must look for them.

I know of no book, but these puppets were generally from wood and probably
papier mache. Having the opportunity to operate them was sheer pleasure. O.
had invented a way for the rods and cables to go up through the body and out the
arm connection and down into the hand to control fingers, etc.

BTW, there will be an exhibition of the Obraztsov's rod puppets in "the
Northeast" in May-June. I'm trying to find out where...anyone know? They are
open to having the exhibition travel following the run in the NE. They are
funded by the Russian govt, and are asking only living expenses for two and=20some
other expenses to mount the exhibition elsewhere....the puppets are from the
WWII era. (My information may be a bit sketchy...I'm getting more details.)
Sincerely, Jim Gamble
