Here is the answer I received from PBS concerning the Marionette that cut  it 
strings
while on horse back and rode off out of the show tent during the PBS  promo

Dear Mark,
The names of the talent are Steve Coupe and Sue  Wallace.  They are both 
working puppeteers, and were with the Sydney  Puppet Theater (Australia) 
when the spots were shot in 2003.
