Subject: [Puptcrit] Finishing Coats

OK, Ive dragged out an Apoxie Sculpt cast I took off a bunraku head I carved, it measures 12" wide and 11.5" high, following the contours so it is about a square foot and it is 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch thick and weighs in at a whopping 1pound 1 ounce!!!!! Now even cured Apoxie sculpt is fully carveable, sandable and drillable.
Obviously there is a language barrier here as I only know styrofoam as that white stuff you make bean bags out of and kids surf boards, Im not sure about blue and yellow, which in my foam terms refers to rubber polymer foams...very expensive!
So the thought I had was have you considered surfboard foam? Comes in blanks from most fibreglass shops can be carved with fine detail with very simple tools, including your fingers and is available in a two part liquid form for casting into blocks and blobs of your preferd shape. Being so soft it needs some protection so why not fibreglass over it? you can then add Apoxie sculpt to the area that need more detailing and leave the rest. A quick coat of etch primer (Although I have been using an enamel base instead with great results) and you are ready to go! Costs a lot less than apoxie sculpt, not as cheap as papier mache BUT infinetly stronger and resilient. Weight? The same puppet head as above, cast in the same mold 7 ounces including some apoxie sculpt to clean it up a bit.
Has any one experimented with mixing saw dust and PVA to make a wood putty?
Hope its going well

Daniel
