The Woodford Folk Festival is an institution, it was started by a couple of unempoyed "hippies" at the local show grounds in Maleny (population about 1,200) and, much like Woodstock, it exploded into a million dollar enterprise. In 15 years the Festival now OWNS the 70 odd acre site AND the infra-structure to cater for nearly 200,000 visitors...and growing....The nearest town is Woodford...Population 450, Nearest city is 1.5 hours drive away. There are over 2,000 paid artists and some 1,500 volunteers making it all happen. All profits...and remember there is no government funding AT ALL for this event...go back into buying more land to meet our commitment to restoring the natural environment and in developing and improving our infra-structure...We own our own sewerage works, Water works, an extensive road network and power grid. During the year the open land is farmed. The amazing thing is. . . that the event is OWNED by the Woodford Folk Festival community...no matter where you live or what you do you can identify as a Folky or a Woody and claim some ownership of an event that I can only describe as....amazing! there is no big corporation or Government beauracrat behind it....just people, which is why, when you ask what artists get paid, you'll get a wry smile. The 1st Woodford International Festival of Puppetry is a seperate entity, it is funded, it does have corporate sponsorship...to a degree...and it is paying the performers above award rates. We will have a seperate "tent city" with a communal kitchen for Puppeteers, Friends and Family........and although there will be professional development opportunities for puppeteers and tons of networking (dont forget the international conference of Puppetry is in Oz in 2008) it is a FESTIVAL...a celebration of all puppetry for every one....and very family friendly....so why not come camping with us and have a bloody good time! Daniel PS Charleville-Mezieres? Now THATS a Puppet Festival! ----- Original Message ----- From: "W & P KREFTING" <kreftingfamily-AT-msn.com> To: <puptcrit-driftline.org-AT-lists.driftline.org> Sent: Thursday, May 12, 2005 6:59 AM Subject: [Puptcrit] Attracting festival goers etc etc I am curious, after looking at Daniel's invite to come to Brisbane Australia for Woodford Folk Festival, what does the festival pay their performers, if anything. It looks like most people camp out, or arrange their own accommodations.
