One of my 4th graders now, told me that his cousin had been in my class years ago and still remembers being Baba Yaga in Vasilissa the Beautiful.. That cousin had been a very hyperactive boy and my worst reader, when he wanted to do that part, I have to admit somewhat reluctant to let him, but said OK.... and he did a great job. The current 4th grader, also going through some tough times now, loved that I even still had the original puppet from about 8 years ago. He has been so much more cooperative and happier in class since we began working on this story. We may now present the puppet to the 19 year old when he comes to visit, since way back when he was just lending it to me so I could use it at Puppets: Ed Magic** that summer. Working on two shows now with 4th graders is getting them to focus more and reread as well, and have been the most motivated all year despite the work we also have to do to get ready for the dreaded MCAS state testing in a few weeks.
