Preston is right, it is Japanese. "Ashi" means "feet" or "legs".  
"Odori" means "dance", but the term is used loosely to describe the 
movements of actors, puppets, etc.
Preston is also on the mark about PUK (wow, pretty good for a New 
Yorker, heh). They have indeed done it, but add that it's a tradition 
that began elsewhere in japan, maybe in Saitama. When I asked for more 
info it was suggested that UNIMA Japan might be helpful. Actually, 
UNIMA has recently moved in to share the same building with Puk, making 
that corner of Tokyo a virtual bull's eye for puppet stuff here.

By the way, I live in Saitama, and hadn't heard of the style you're
