WORLDS OF SHADOW by David and Donna Wisniewski is written as a
teacher's resource on shadow puppets on the overhead, but it is very
useful. Advanced techniques include rolling scenery, polarization
effects and polor motion. We've used it in creating shadow sequences
in our shows. You can get it at P of A's Puppetry Store. Go to
www.puppeteers.org and click on the Puppetry Store. The bonus is there
are activities for different ages that can be used in presenting
children's workshops.

We have several different overheads. Look for high lumens (3000 or
more) and the quick change bulb feature. One that folds is nice. You
can find projectors at office supply stores, as well as the
transparency film for your printer. Colors on the transparency often
look different when projected, so buy a big box to allow for mistakes.

At the Center for Puppetry Arts, they were using mirrors behind the
projectors to double their focal length. The projectors were aimed at
the mirrors, which reflected onto the shadow screen. Our favorite
screen is the grey rear projection cloth. The grey was recommended as
the material to work best when there is ambient light and it works very
well. We use the screen to project scenery while lighting rod or hand
puppets at an angle from the front, as well as operating shadows on the
overhead.

Good luck an have fun!

Subject: [Puptcrit] Some Questions

  Hello all,

I have some questions since I am embarking on a shadow
puppet project coming up.

The first is what kind of overhead projectors people
personally prefer.

The second is what are some great resources for
learning about contemporary shadow puppet production
that people can recommend.

Oh, and another, while I am at it, a good place in NYC
to have transparencies printed.

Okay, I think that is it for now.

Thanks,

Yvette
