It would be foolish, on any level, to have such an auction at a festival because a) such a small percentage of the membership comes to any one festival and b) a wider auction would garner much higher bids which would make it much more lucrative for PofA. Widespread publicity would be key as there are many many puppeteers who don't belong to any of the three big puppetry organizations. It's also possible that an auction house, which is better equipped than us to do the logistics of these events, might consider doing it for us pro bono. That should be looked into. I think a one year timeline would be adequate to- announce the project to a wide swath, solicit appropriate donations, procure an auctioneer or auction house (who will be set up for simultaneous remote bidding), procure a "holding location", create an online catalogue, work out the logistics of the auction, advertise widely, and then have the auction. It's even within the realm of the possible for one of the larger guilds to tale this on as a guild project. And wouldn't it be fabulous if it could occur on the national day of puppetry some year? Now there's a publicity hook.
