I just got back from Tokyo a couple days ago (visiting family). Didn't have time for performances :-(,
but I did get to visit a Noh mask maker.

It's been a few days, but I had forwarded the bunraku question to Larry
Kominz, professor of Japanese Studies at Portland State University (emphasis in

Theatre). He happens to be on our board of directors- and he writes:

Please forward this answer to your friend with the question about Bunraku.

Barbara Adachi is correct. There are many scenes in which two or more tayu
sing
(and speak). Two tayu are often used for michiyuki scenes, which have a lot
of
singing in them. Examples would be the michiyuki in `Sonezaki Shinju` and
`Chushingura.` Humorous scenes with many characters also often use several
tayu.

Right now I'm at a hotel in Tokyo and don't have my personal library at hand,
but if you need more specific scenes in which several tayu are used, contact
me
by e-mail after August 29, when I will be back in Portland.

(so, Jamie- I'd be happy to introduce you via e-mail to Larry when he's back
at home)
yours,
Nancy
