Hi Carolyn It seems to me that the company is looking for two low skilled performers to work some puppets for them and there for should be paid according to their skill level and expenses if there is a lot of travel involved or an overnight stay. What type of conference is it? If it is an educational or non-profit you might consider a lower rate. If this is a normal business conference, then know that they have money and should pay a fair rate for talent. An internship like an apprenticeship is usually unpaid. That is because there is an expectation that the intern will receive some benefit from the experience. This can be a very valuable experience, a time when a student can learn more about their craft and their profession then would ever be possible in a classroom. It does not sound like that is the deal here. This company is looking for cheep labor (free is as cheep as you can get) I have administered internships where students were paid, this was part of an economic incentive in a low income area. It had some other goals besides the training of the students. That's my two cents.
