From your post it looks like they are looking for some puppeteers at
the lowest pay scale they can get - none. No indication if this is
local to you. I would get a bit more info about what they are going to
be doing to better evaluate the skills needed and then set a rate that
is in accordance to what is required (time, skill, expenses incurred,
etc.) and who you are able to send. Also might want to be sure they
only need two people. Are they going to be working only a short while
or a 12 hour day non-stop? Might require shifts or some relief. Non
puppeteers often have no idea what it takes. If they want someone to do
some sort of hand and mouth puppet with lip sync for 59 minutes a hour
for 12 hours while people visit their booth, you might need to set them
straight. It is not safe to assume they know what they are asking for.
Just because you may be sending students does not mean that they are
beginners or not otherwise worth paying. But you should also impart on
this sponsor, in a nice way, they get what they pay for and if this is
an important part of the conference they might want to be sure it looks
good and therefore invest a proper amount of money in the skills needed
to make them look good. Really amateurish performances could be worse
than none at all.
That's my twelve cents.
Christopher
