Subject: [Puptcrit] Re: Puptcrit-driftline.org Digest, Vol 11,

Ralph Chesse. puppet maker, puppeteer, actor, artist was born in Louisiana as a left-handed person, but in school was forced to write with his right hand, as well as paint, draw, etc. Decades later when THE BOOK about drawing with the right side of the brain came out, he painted with his left hand and to the surprise of many, he had a new style.

To some degree most puppeteers I have worked with have been somewhat ambidextrous-

On the other hand, having been taught to write by nuns who beleived that=20
left handedness was evil inspired (and I kid you not) I received many=20
humiliations and punishments......Im pretty aware of anti-left handed=20
sentiment! I take great delight in reminding people that if right handed=20
people use the left side of their brain that means only left handed people
are in their right mind!
It is a good point and it is important, our duty in fact, particularly in
this political climate, that we all are very sensitive of our host nations
customs and cultures BEFORE we get there........

Yours in left handedness

One thing I've noticed in my many years of puppeteering, is the majority of
puppeteers I've worked with have been left handed. As a fellow lefty, I=20
was wondering how many other leftys are out there on puppetcrit.

I'm not a lefty, though at one point I broke my arm
and was in a cast for several months, and had to work
a rod puppet left handed. Since I had no choice, I was
able to get used to it, almost as well as my right. I
of course switched back to my right hand eventually,
though a year later, when I picked up that same
puppet, I naturally put my left hand inside first.

I'm right handed, but my wife, Kathy, is a lefty, although she wasn't born
that way. Similar to Frankie's story, a series of unfortunate right hand
accidents at a young age forced her into left handed dominance. Not
surprisingly, she's pretty close to ambidextrous.

Wow! So many comments about the left hand? Even if I knew about its=20
significance in Tunisia, I still would have used my left hand because I AM
LEFT HANDED AND I DON'T CARE!

I am also much better at manipulating puppets with my left than my right.
Strange, because I play the piano and cello using both hands with equal=20
importance.

In Punch and Judy performing, particularly, it has long been considered that
placing Mr Punch himself on the left hand was, indeed, bad luck, and southpaw
Punch professors were reportedly mocked.

The idea for this came, no doubt, from the fact that Punch is the main=20
character in the show, and remains on one hand for the entire performance (for the
most part), while the other characters who intrude upon him enter on the left
hand. Punch is always dominant, indeed.

Being left handed myself, I never paid much attention to the superstition,
and oddly enough my new Judy feels as awkward on my left hand as my Punch feels
inappropriate on my right. The puppets have let me know, it seems, where
they want to sit, and it has nothing to do with superstition. Not with that
PARTICULAR superstition, anyway.

Man! I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous!
