Subject: [Puptcrit] Unfortunate cancellation of Thai puppets' appearances in


At 4:30 p.m. today I received a call informing me that the much awaited Thai rod puppet troupe was denied visas. None of the other participants in the World Festival of Sacred Music experienced this fate. It is with regret that the Conservatory of Puppetry Arts is unable to host the troupe for a Pasadena performance Sept. 19.

This has overtones of the San Francisco puppet guild experience trying to transfer funds to a new treasurer. There are times when government regulations are contradictory, when officials give out contradicting information, and the left hand is disconnected from the right hand in executing policy.

At least we can hope that at some time in the future, The Joe Louis (puppet) Theater, a national treasure of Thailand, CAN visit the United States, perhaps for a wider tour than just the Los Angeles area.
