Yes Alan, I go along with your thesis re shadow puppets, and tell a
similar story when asked about origins, but I think the rod puppet ie an
animal skull on a stick was probably a close second.

Since there are no surviving petroglyphs showing puppet shows in early
human history, and no tablets either, I submit a thesis: First, there
was a story-teller in a cave, or seated/standing near a rock or cliff
wall. A fire provided light and warmth for the story-weaver and the
listeners. It was night time, and the audience and the story teller
noticed patterns of the story-weaver's hands on the wall. Then the
story-weaver incorporated the hand shadows into the stories, and adding
sticks, pieces of leaves and leatherskin the shadow puppet was born.
Shadows are easily carried by nomadic people and easily made from "found
materials".

It would not matter if the story teller was left or right-handed. What
counted was the story. The story would outweigh factors of gender or
orientation. There were no fundamentalist concerns about Adam & Eve vs
Adam & Steve, in cave days--I don't recall caves mentioned as part of
the Garden of Eden--tho I think caves existed and cave people existed
before Genesis was written.

Later, story-telling was amplified by face painting, which led to
separate faces called masks. Add a cup of dance, sprinkle with 3 tsp of
music, add a body to the mask, and you have the first hand puppets, rod
puppet & marionettes.

Now THAT is INTELLIGENT DESIGN!---ALAN COOK

Anybody care to weigh in on the likelihood that puppetry was originally
invented by left handed illegitimate gay pagan cave-women?

was
obviously the machinations of an ambi-dextrous illegitimate gay pagan

Please! Must you show such insensitivity? Clearly she was an
ambi-dextrous illegitimate gay pagan cave womon. Why must people always

harness womyn to men?
