Subject: [Puptcrit] Neoprene

At least 40 years ago, neoprene was used by Los Angeles puppeteers whom I worked for: Jack Shafton and Rene Zendejas. At first, the manufacturer was trying to find commercial uses for the product, other than for just shoe soles and backing for non-skid carpets. Puppeteers were part of the Research & Develoment process.

Hey, and then perhaps I'd get a chance to see it, as I missed "Sixpence" in

Since Mary Robinette Kowal reccomended wood, I'm tempted to suggest paper
mache and Chiesatine, both great puppet making mediums, when used inside=20
negative moulds.

Forget all the common opinions that PM is weak, uneven, rough, warps, and is
hard to control.
It all depends on the recipe and approach you use, for your purpose.

I've been experimenting with paper mache strips in negative plaster moulds,
and you can get amazing detailed results, provided you are patient and=20
meticulous for the first two layers.

But the best, smoothest and lightest yet STRONG way I've tried is called=20
Chiesatine.
A detailed yet EASY way of layering two types of cotton, bound together with
a mix of white glue and polyfilla. The cottons are simply the fluffy
absorbent cotton in sheet form, and cheescloth!

I learned it in a maskmaking course last month.
The resulting object is as smooth as the mould it comes from!
It is smooth like plaster, sandable, and can easily take dyes!

I'm writing a tutorial on this, but have not enough time right now to finish
it.
So far, I've got 90% of the text down, but the pics are not embeded.
30 pages in WORD format so far. If anyone is interested in seeing the work
in progress, give me a sign.

The name Chiesatine is not registered, and the "inventor" of it probably=20
doesn't even know the stuff is now called after him. The inventor is a=20
maskmaker from italy, his family name is Chiesa, and the medium's name was
made up by a maskmaker who learned the method from him.
That person told us, in the course, that Chiesa was looking for a substitue
for leather, and came up with this.

I received this message from an acquaintance working in the shelters
in LA - needing supplies for arts, etc. For those who don't know
anyone in LA helping in the shelters or those who are victims, I
decided to send the letter to the list. It gives a picture of what
people are dealing with there, and a way we can help. I think
accountability at all levels, rather than blame, is what is
needed. But in the mean time, here's maybe a way to help. Puppets,
art supplies needed. I also have info/organizations websites for
those who want to donate to musicians/artists specifically, if so,
let me know. Please- Forgive the long post.

Diane Kordas

 From LA:
The Hurricane saga continues. Last night our shelters got over 1000
more evacuees from Houston and Lake Charles, LA. We were in the
shelter again today doing art with many children ages 3-18 who had
come with this 2nd "diaspora" and were not yet enrolled in
schools. We did art, we did music and we learned how to share and
take turns and be nice to one another. These children crave
love. It is heartbreaking. We went to our evening shelter location
and we left because there is so much turmoil there now. Two weeks
ago everyone had just settled in and all were getting along. People
had their space and their neighbors. Now they are crowding hundreds
of new evacuees in and there are literally turf wars going
on. People are afraid to leave for fear their few belongings will be=20
stolen. Security is more present. There are even metal detectors in=20
one of the shelters.

Now we are fearing Rita is headed straight for us. All schools have
been cancelled tomorrow and all activities here this weekend have
been cancelled. My assistant and I just broke down today. We are
doing so much, but there is so much to do. Our hearts are so
full. We are taking the weekend off to refuel.

Wood? How does one use that? I have been working mostly in stone,
animal hide, bones and firelight in caves.

1) Making difficulties for foreign artists getting
visas goes back as far as the Reagan Administration
for various reasons related to appeasing show biz
interests. It's only gotten worse as bureaucracy has
hardened into place.
Talk to native Canadian performers who've been shut
off from performing on this side.

2) The Philadelphia fiasco was orchestrated by
Pennsylvania paranoids, one of whom was rewarded by

surprized at the mess its in?

I think it's worth keeping in mind that this discussion started off about a
very real problem/challenge for puppet theater: the Thai puppeteers who weren't
allowed into our country. That challenge for American puppet theater still
remains and is worth thinking about; it affects who we are and who we will be.
It's probably possible to discuss such important issues with different points
of view, and not get too personal. That would be great, I think....
