Subject: Re: [Puptcrit] QUITTING PUPPETRY!

I really should be making Tudor style hats right now but I kept thinking about these questions and need a break.

Have you ever been close to quitting puppetry?
Depends on what you mean by quitting. If you mean earning all my income from my puppetry work, then I have quit right now. If you mean putting down puppets all together, I don't think I can. They have been such a part of my life and they are becoming a part of my daughter's life. At 2 and 1/2 she is already using her hands to lip sync to things around her like the Map on Dora.

What keeps you going?
Inspiration I get from others. I see someone's puppet show and it speaks to my soul. My husband is very supportive of my endeavors as is the rest of my family. Then there is my audience, they give me kudos for doing what I do and give me that extra boost that makes it all worth it.

Why did you start in the first place?
I can't really remember a time that I didn't dabble in puppets. Even when I was at the Yale School of Drama, I ended up giving a hand to a show called "The Warrior Ant" because they knew I knew puppets. It just seems to be a large part of who I am. I identify myself to others as a puppeteer, stage manager, and book editor. It tends to be in that order.

What are your biggest challenges?
Earning enough money from puppetry to pay the bills or at least the cost of creating the puppets and the show. Also getting off my duff and actually doing puppets rather than planning it out in my head. I have lots of great shows in my head but only a couple fully realized and I have venues that I could do these shows in if I would complete them

What are your biggest motivators?
Panic when something is due?
The work of others gives me both inspiration and motivation to continue.
This list motivated me to think about puppets and puppetry and what I might do along with some pitfalls to avoid.
Most of all my family who has support me and my puppets for many years and always ask me what puppet am I work on now.

OK, now I can go read the other answers to these questions. This was very thought provoking.
