It reminds me specifically of the stories people told about playing mahjong on the sly, quietly shuffling the tiles on warm summer nights, hoping that the local beat cop wouldn't hear them clinking together through the open windows. (But just in case, many tables had hidden compartments where the tiles and money could be quickly concealed if someone came knocking on the door - at least that was the story our friends told us.) Taiwan was also where I first became interested in the mechanics of puppetry and puppet making years ago, watching traditional street shows given by itinerant puppet companies...
