I always thought the "playboard" was the place where the rod puppet 
placed it's feet, and on which props stood, or the
area directly in front of a hand puppet, where props were placed and 
which served as the "stage," as it were, for the characters.
You know, the board on which the play is presented.

Who was it who said, "All the world's a playboard, and we are but the 
meat puppets?"  Francis Bacon?  Jimmy Sausage?
Billy Barty?  I dunno.  Maybe it was me.
