(Are the puppets you speak of marionettes or some other type?) That is to say, there is a good chance that the Oregon puppets, if they are from the early twentieth century, could be minstrel-style characters. john bell great small works -----Original Message----- From: puptcrit-bounces-AT-lists.driftline.org [mailto:puptcrit-bounces-AT-lists.driftline.org] On Behalf Of Susan Kinney Sent: Tuesday, October 18, 2005 12:31 PM To: puptcrit-AT-lists.driftline.org; puptcrit-driftline.org-AT-lists.driftline.org Subject: [Puptcrit] identifying puppets Dear all, I have received a query from a gentleman in Oregon which I have no answer to. He has two African-American puppets that he would like to know more about if possible. They are wood with papier mache heads. The only distinguishing marks are the words "Lewis" on the back on one's leg and "C(orG)EA" on the back of one's neck. I realize this is very little to go on but I thought I would ask the experts before I reply to him since he apparently does not have internet access. Do those two inscriptions ring any bells with anyone?
