as regards animating or pixilating people, you might look at some work
that Norman McClaren did for the National Film Board in the fifties (one
of which won an Oscar, I believe) A Chairy Tale, Neighbours and Pas de
Deux. I too found the motion capture characters in Polar Express to be
creepy, except for the hobo, who was a ghost, after all. What puzzles me
is why they did it. There was nothing gained and a lot lost that might
have been there if the actors had been allowed to act. Great train,
though.
