Roger,
One way to avoid the light showing is to put it below or above the sightline; shine it down or up, onto the screen. Also, multiple, smaller light sources, can diffuse the power of the lighting.

  Dear Puppeteers,

I am very much in need of help regarding some problems I'm having using a
shadow screen for a show at our local Community Center. I have done some shadow
work before in workshops and little shows for my kids and their friends, but
nothing like this.

We are using a 3'X5' screen, with live actors and puppets. I've never done
anything this big. Here's my main problem:
My light source is so bright you can almost see the filament through the
fabric; I can't figure a way to difuse the light for a smoother field without
dulling it or risking a fire hazard.

Has anyone encountered this problem before, and if so, how did you deal with
it? I can't find information online or in books about the details of large
scale shadow screen lighting. Any advice you could share would be greatly
appreciated. Thank you.

Yours sincerely,
Roger Jackson
