Hey Fred, et al,

I'm assuming the Guilford Arts Center is what used to be the Guilford Craft
Center. As a former craft artist (art quilts) who used to exhibit at such
places, I have no problem with this call or concept. It is the normal
format. No doubt the net will be cast much wider than just performing
puppeteers. It's nice to see a rare opportunity for those who are
puppetmakers, as well as performers, to show off their stuff to a general
audience. I'm sure they'll also get entries from artists of several media
who "dabble" in making puppets.

When you make a great puppet show- or video, or film, etc.- there are often
many chances to make money from the product. When you create visual art, you
only get the one sale. Usually you exhibit it, hoping it will sell.
Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't (I'm still wondering what to do with
a self-portrait I did way back when.... who the heck's going to buy it?) but
you get some real validation from being accepted into prestigious galleries
like this one where someone else does the work of selling it for you. And
winning the "prizes" (usually cash) is the art world's equivalent of winning
an UNIMA Citation.... it's one of the few things that give you bragging
rights on your resume.

I say, hear hear to this gallery for realizing what wonderful objects d'art
puppets are in their own right.

Karen
