John Durang was the first american born professional actor... he also did some puppet shows. We did a performance at the Hole in the Wall Puppet Theater which was a biography of his life. One of the elements used in the show, though not actually puppets, were "Illuminations". These are paintings which are simply black line art on the front. On the back side it is colored in with water color paints. When they turn off the front lamps, and illuminated them from behind the painting transforms into the color version.
