I usually perform for the public on weekends, and in schools on weekdays. More and more, school officials are banning holiday celebrations so as not to offend certain religious minorities, no matter how small. I've never met a principal, teacher or parent who actually approved of this, but it's happening nationwide and no one seems to be protesting. It's had an adverse affect on my school bookings. Luckily, I have an expanded repertoire to offer. But what a lousy situation. I'm glad my daughter's school is not run by paranoid administrators. Robert Rogers I grew up as a Jewish child in a predominantly Christian public school in the 50's and 60's. I have vivid memories of the carols we had to sing, the holiday programs we had to attend and the holiday decorations we had to make and display. These things disregarded who I was. I had to participate but felt like an outsider to it all. I remember asking my mother how Santa knew not to come to our house. I don't consider it "paranoid" for administrators to respect the diversity of their student bodies. Here's to expanded repertoires that are inclusive of even the smallest minorities!
