Subject: [Puptcrit] Stop Motion Puppets

I'd recommend studying videos of Gumby, Davey & Goliath, the California Raisins, any old movies by pioneering Starevich, Ray Harryhausen. Check out the recent BIG book by Harryhausen currently in bookstores.

There may be local stop-motion and/or cartoon animation classes for kids (some art centers have provided them in the past as at the Junior Art Center in Hollywood CA. Gary Schwartz has done one-day workshops at our Getty Museum and for an L.A. Guild Puppet Day. He uses a "lunchbox" device attached to video monitor so onscreen you can see the previous frame and the current one superimposed. saves lots of time---we used a gauge which had to be placed and removed from the set between each shot for DAVEY & GOLIATH in the 1960s. New technology is at least 4 times faster, and can help with the smoothness of motion.

Hi Mary,

Thanks for the kind words. When I was 17 I used to
play with my parent's high 8 video camera. You can get
a used one pretty cheap. However, if she really wants
to be a puppet filmmaker when she grows up, if she can
get her hands on a mini DV camera then she may be able
to begin making films that can be edited with consumer
computer editing software that is now coming with some
home PCs or Macs.

Thanks Daniel, that was inspiring and encouraging!
I would love to see those finger skulls you mentionned.
I'm a sucker for well-made skulls, stylised or not.

I too love the small shows, and would prefer to perform those myself.

But as a maker of puppets, I also have to think about possibilities for my
customers, and small audiences are not often seen as money bringing, when
you consider all the effort that goes into promoting a show.

I'm starting to see Finger Puppets as baby Rod Puppets. I don't know how you
call those in English, but in French they call the simple puppet I'm talking
about a "marotte". Only a head and some dangling arms on a single stick. No
added rods, no mecanics or effects.
I had no interest in those (how can this be a true puppet?) until I saw a
complete show with these. AWESOME!
What movements! What expressivity! And the marottes were very
primitive-looking, with wooden balls for heads and mittens for hands. The
costumes made all the difference. Simple but very efficient. Rich colors, no
overkill of details.

My robot, Tornado 2.0, is a more complex-looking marotte, which I made soon
after I saw the show:

I think we call them a Mace but may be wrong....Czech Marionettes has a few
really beautiful ones and some are double faced...
http://www.czechmarionettes.com/published_v1/ShopPage.aspx?artistID=6&marionetteID=153&type=Original
for example

Of course Heda's puppets like Spejbl or Hurvinek are classics in less is
more.....

There was a finger puppet puppeteer, Sheffield, who did some lovely things at
PofA Festivals back in 1955-56. He had strippers and other night club acts
with finger puppets. I must research my old journals to remember the
details. (Sorry, I'm havin g senior, grandpa moment......) Maybe Alan Cook can
help...he attended the same festivals...Jim Gamble

We also saw some fine work in Zagreb at the PIF Festival, night club style
finger puppet acts....JG ( I think i have video of this act.) Maybe after
Christmas, I can do some searching....

Definitely Mac. With as much RAM and hard drive as you can afford, and
since you want to make movies, be sure to get one with a DVD burner. It
is not that much more than one that only reads DVDs and burns CDs. High
end iBook or one of the Powerbooks will depend on your budget.
As to the camera, go digital if possible (less conversion issues) and
look for one that has firewire transfer from camera to computer. Again,
don't worry about trying to get the best, just go as high end as your
budget will allow.
With a digital camera and a Mac you will probably be ready to go right
out of the box.
