Subject: [Puptcrit] Historical use of Monitors - in no way trying to


Burr Tillstrom was using monitors during the Kukla, Fran, and Ollie show at
least back in the 40's (see lower picture on page 160 of the May 23rd, 1949
issue of Life Magazine). Even if it were something he started using in 1949
that still would have been 3 1/2 years before Uncle Chichimus and the start
of CBC Television and six years before the airing of Sam & Friends.
I have no idea if this gives Tillstrom the award for being "first" for such 
a use.
Others could have done it before him. Someone else in the studio might have
just made it available for him. Such technology is easy to pick up and
use if you see someone else, or hear of someone else doing it.
However, the refered to picture in Life magazine might be the "first" published
picture of someone using monitors for puppetry.
