The policeman is of course a gendarme, but the "Punch" puppet is really Guignol, the silk weaver character who replaced the French version of Punch, Polichinelle. (And Guignol is only feigning death, in case you were worried. He ends up attacking the poor cop.) There are many active Guignol theatres in Paris, including the one featured in the movie. All are inexpensive to attend, and there is, for good or ill, much less of the old-fashioned violence. The 3-disc set of Brazil has a section on the puppets in the extras. I'd forgotten about the ones in Time Bandits. Guess I'm due to see that one again. Darn! :-) Brothers Grimm has some puppets scattered about here and there. I may have to go back and watch Twelve Monkeys and Fisher King just to see if there are some tucked away somewhere. There is a Pinocchio doll in Fisher King, but I don't remember actual puppets. Not a Gilliam movie, but there is a Punch and Judy show in Charade with Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant. She sort of narrates it for those unfamiliar with the show.
