The pics I have found were small and in black and white, and it was kind of hard trying to guess at the colors and materials. Now I already have a few ideas on how the puppet is built. Thanks a lot! Thanks Fred for your detailed answer. It's always great to hear about processes I rarely hear about. The foam expanding without being stopped is a good tip to avoid catastrophe. I have met Petr Matasek from Tzech Republic, who makes a lot of his puppets with basswood/Linden. since I saw his work at the exhibition, I've wanted to try carving in that type of wood. Unfortunately, I'll have to go to a special wood store for professional craftsmen (arent' we?), because my local hardware stores do not carry basswood apparently, at least not in blocks of useable sizes (I will still have to glue, but not thin planks thanks very much). His students I also met said the shorter grain of the wood makes it easier to work with, easier to carve and shape with a knife, finish with rasps, files and sandpaper. A mix of sawdust and glue and plaster can be quite strong., It does not have a very long open time to work with. Which would explain why I've never been able to do lots of details with it. I've done a few experiments direct sculpting with it. My next attempts I will replace the plaster with Poly Filla, which is similar to plaster, but is called a cellulose compound, and acts like a slow-setting plaster. Takes much longer to dry, but not exceedingly so. I'm thinking there is still some gypsum in that stuff. Works the same exact way, although I don't remember if it heats up...
