My Flasher Dirty Old Man marionette in my cabaret show would be offended by
the use of this new term "flash puppetry!" How rude of them to step into my
arena. Jim Gamble

Has anyone else seen the Acdemy Award nominations? The Mysterious
Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello has been nominated for best

"Anthony Lucas also continued Australia's strong Oscar tradition in the
short animated film category with his 27 minute, cutout animation
movie, The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello,
nominated."

So I am confused (as usual).
Is the film actually done with actual, traditional, frame by frame
cut-out animation.
Or is it actually all done on a computer using FLASH.
Or a combination?
Or doesn't it matter anymore as actual film gives way to pixels?

I would bet that it also includes 3D animation
combined with cutout / flash. The big cinematic
moves of some objects in some scenes are animated
3D models, even though it is ultimately silhouettes.

That dirty old man marionette is a vivid memory for me from the World
Puppetry Festival in 1980. Truly an inspired idea, beautifully executed. I
can't begin to guess how many images washed over me that week, but the
percent that stuck with me is pretty low. You were definitely way ahead of
the curve for "flash animation", Jim.

Just saw an interesting discussion with Anthony Lucas, the creator of "The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello". Apparently it was nearly all silhouette cut outs manipulated manually (stop frame) on collaged backgrounds and then digitally enhanced...3D shots of the ship wasn't CGI but again stop motion! (I guess that makes it more than a FLASH in the pan.......sorry)
Of course the film has already won Australian and international awards including THE BIG ONE....Annecy 2005 which is adjudicated by the top 500 animators in the world.
Im certainly looking forward to seeing it........

This may not be the right forum to ask this question, but why do my e-mail
inquiries to the P of A website go unanswered? I joined back in July and
promptly received a journal, but have heard nothing since. No membership
info, no nothing. And no response to my inquiries as to why.

What's going on?

Greetings Critters,

I'm off to Japan, specifically to Sendai Feb. 4-20 for performances. I
was there many years ago, under PUK sponsorship. This time it's only for
the Miyagi prefecture, so I'll be pretty much just around Sendai, and it will be
cold. Any suggestions? Best wishes to all. Jim Gamble
