Subject: Re: [Puptcrit] msg from Lettie Schubert's son

Even a quick email exchange with Lettie would brighten my day.

In 1961 Lettie brought the PofA national festival to a sort of enchanted
place on the California coast called Asilomar. At that festival Jim Henson
first met Frank Oz and Jerry Juhl. Frank and Jerry were both working for
Lettie. What if that extraordinary encounter had never happened?

How I envy the San Francisco puppeteers who had the chance to frequently
enjoy Lettie's warmth and wisdom.

Lettie gave me permission to quote this story in the foreword I contributed
to "American Puppetry." In her own words you get a sense of her keen eye,
and her great love for the art of puppetry, and puppeteers.

"One year I went to a puppet festival in Buxton, England. The exhibit was
full of small and mostly crudely made old puppets (which I am sure delighted
and interested many audiences), but then I came across a beautifully
designed display with the magnificently designed puppets of John Blundall
from Cannon Hill Theatre at Birmingham. I knew I had to go meet the artist,
so just as soon as the festival was over, I took a train to Birmingham, a
taxi to Cannon Hill and asked to buy a ticket to that afternoon's
performance. I mentioned I was a puppeteer from the United States. John
appeared and took me to tea and showed me his studio, his fabulous book
collection and his puppet collection. I was inspired, awed and impressed."
