Thought I would clarify some things about this material. Cost is not the main issue for specialized applications like the mobile performer (sorry I forgot the cost, but it wasn't THAT expensive for useful sizes). Aside from catching comet dust, I think its main application is as an insulator. The problem for many uses is that it is essentially foamed glass. It is not a rugged material, and can be a bit brittle from what I've read. Besides, for most puppet applications, you NEED some weight to feel what the puppet is doing.
