Jamie: Steve Abrams has done a rather broad survey of various puppet collections, public and private. I believe he's on tour right now but will be back in Philly next week. Steve Abrams - sapuppets-AT-ucwphilly.rr.com Off the top of my head, I think Alan Cook's collection at COPA has to be the largest, with perhaps Detroit Institute of Arts and The Ballard Museulm and Institute of Puppetry (BIMP) at UConn possible close seconds. Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta has a good collection. I can't help you with numbers. BIMP features many of the puppets (hundreds) created for and by the puppet arts program at UConn since the program began in 1968 and which changed hands and direction in 1989 with the retirement of Frank Ballard. The puppet arts program is still going strong in a beautiful new and extensive LAB facility at UConn. BIMP also houses most of the Rufus and Margo Rose puppets (those that survived the studio fire in 1961), The Marjorie Batchelder McPharlin collection and many other smaller but significant groupings of puppets, masks and shadows from all over the world. I can't give you numbers, but I know the Rose collection perhaps contains upwards of 125 marionettes and a few hand puppets. Hope this helps.
