Subject: [Puptcrit] More tutorials from Puppet101 blog

Sean Johnson, one Artist behind Swazzle dot com is very generous with his time and techniques!
I've been waiting for better online tutorials about puppet building and this looks like it!

First, check out the website:
http://www.swazzle.com

Then, check out the VIDEO behind the Scenes Section!

THEN, check out the puppet101 blog, full of information, if you take the time to search...

Full puppet-building tutorial!
http://swazzle.com/blogs/2006/03/puppet-building-tutorial-ratchet.html
This one is a keeper!

I only checked out the mouth making so far.
I think I finally understand what a comfy puppet mouth grip can be.
My attempts, without precise instructions are at best ok. This seems much better!
I'd better get that Foam Book from grey Seal puppets soon!
I wonder if their DVD is out yet. (totally unrelated to this page)

Arm rods tutorial:
http://swazzle.com/blogs/2006/01/puppet-building-tutorial-arm-rods.html
Awesomely simple!
Seems very comfortable and easy to control.
Certainly beats the round dowel and gaffer's tape, which eventually becomes sticky and uncomfortable.

I am glad I stumbled upon a small hardware store a few months ago that carries the plasti-dip.
I hadn't seen it anywhere else before, or after.

Make a Pea Puppet from a foam ball. Easiest mouth puppet I've seen.

---------
Plastic Spoons for eyes : it looks much better than you might think!
I just wish I knew what glue to use for a permanent bond between this tricky plastic and fabric.

Ping-pong balls for eyes:
http://swazzle.com/blogs/2005/11/puppet-eyes-ping-pong-balls.html
It needs more specific details and options, but it's got good startup information.

I would like to add that hot glue works on ping pong balls, just make sure you unplug the gun before it reaches macimum heat. I also paint my eyeballs with acrylic paint, let completely dry (do not speed-dry with heat) and then varnish to protect the ball against getting dirty, and to provide a nice wet shine. (A toxic varnish gives a stronger and better-looking finish anyday). My latest sucessful attempt was with a clear high gloss fingernail varnish. (Diamond Shine from Sally Hansen, I think). Next time I will simply pour onver the ball and turn around, instead of using the applicator. Less bumps and puddles that way.
