Subject: [Puptcrit] Digital recorder?

Hello...

A friend called the other day asking for some advice on sound
recording and I couldn't come up with a good answer, so I'm turning
to all of you.

He's somewhat retired from puppetry, and sort of shifting gears to do
some work for his church. He wants to field record church or
community events, edit very brief sound documentaries on his
computer, and then make them available to people who can't get around
very easily.

He wants to go beyond cassette tapes and record sound digitally.
Needs an easy way to get sound into the computer (think it's a Mac)
and then do some simple editing before burning it to a CD.

I've done some looking around online, but have any of you had a
particularly good experience with a digital field recorder, one
that's not super expensive? Some sound editing software that you
especially like?

Thanks,

Paul Eide
