As far as sound editing on the computer goes, for free there's Audacity is 
really nice, and depending on your OS ProTools has some good software, too. 
Both available through links from: 
http://www.transom.org/tools/editing_mixing/

One not free, but fairly inexpensive program I also use is GoldWave 
(http://www.goldwave.com/). It's about 40 bucks, if I remember, and is easy 
to use, also.
