Subject: Re: [Puptcrit] Pack Rat Day?!?!

Yay!
I feel complete as human being in society!!
I can finally have a holiday I can celebrate in all joy and enthusiasm!
Thanks Anne for sharing this info with us!

I'm VERY tempted to go dumpster diving, since I'm not supposed to do
cleaning up on this holliday.
(although Iw as planning to prior to know it was such a day!). Tonight is
the time when people put their recycling on the curb for tomorrow morning...
I hope it won't rain...
I can't wait to get my treasure hunting gear.

Treasure hunting gear:

I recently found out that my vertical laundry basket is compatible with my
bicycle basket.
The base is just the right size to fit in there, so I can stack even more
stuff on my bike!
Straps hold the basket in there very securely.

I bring bags and boxes and practical tools, such as:
-safe working gloves (double-rubber coated)
-Screwdriver (multi head, called Quick-pik)
-small Saw
-Vise Grip (you never know what needs prying open, or tight unscrewing)
-many straps
-flashlight

On my last treasure hunt, wich was totally unplanned, I found 6 HUGE wooden
shelves, made of actual wood, not of presswood. Worth about 300$ if bought
new, but they had all the fittings as well! They were better than new, they
were already painted and had some natural damage from regular use. They look
gorgeous in my studio, and as a small bench I assembled from one of them and
a chair leg set I also found another time.

I am currently specifically looking for washers, spring steel, hinges, and
good wood.
I usually find everything BUT the stuff I am looking for at the moment, but
it turns out what I find ends up being even more useful.

I love living in Montreal!
The people are soo "generous" in their trash.
It is so easy to throw stuff away here. But I use that option smartly. In my
neighborhood, if I need to get rid of something that is still useable, I put
it on the curb, at ANY time (if it's not voluminous).
Within two hours, it will be gone. There must be lots of pack rats in this
area.

If only there could be a special service picking up all the goodies, to
bring them to a warehouse where we could get them for a very small price (to
pay for the transport, warehouse, and personel).
We have something kind of like that, but it's more like people bring stuff
to them for free, and they sell it at a price that is way too high for what
effort they didn't put into it.
