I'll toss out one idea that works for me.
Short silk or rayon fringe used in upholstery or as trim on drapes has a 
weight of it's own that would respond to gravity. IF you need something finer, the 
silk or rayon threads used in tassels moves in a similar way. These can be 
dyed to any color...
