To be honest Mathieu I use what comes to hand quickly when I need to make
one..... We have just rewired a three phase distribution board so I have a
lot of very thick copper wire which for bigger work or firmer clay is great.
I prefer the wire I find in whats called builders wire, the earth wire that
is used in buildings. It is finer than the 3 phase but still strong. I can
form a nice tight loop using it. Any finer...such as from a figure 8 power
lead (found on glue guns) is going to be ineffectual in anything other than
soft clay. For the BIG jobs like scooping out a one piece or two piece
plaster mold I use a wire coat hanger!
Memory wire is good but you have to remember to get it......Hey its Sunday
here!.
the bladed ones are important where you need a consistent
depth/width/straight incision.
For Clay I pretty well stick to regular and firm Klean Klay with Chavant P40
for very detailed work (and especially water clear casts) for silicon molds
(sulphur free) and your basic Earthenware clay for plaster and Latex molds.
I tried porceline clay but found it dried very quickly and was extremely
powdery for my purpose.

Hi Daniel,
Did you makie your loop tool from a very soft and pliable opper wire, or a
very stiff one?
Cause the memory wire I use is very thin caliber, making it constant and it
cuts like a dream through the clay.
I had my doubts, since my commercial-bought loop tool has a blade edge to be
able to cut.
My home-made cuts better in a way.
