If you make it into a string marionette, make sure to string it properly at the knee, so that i won't bend backwards, like morst 'walking' marionnettes I see in toy stores. A fixed string located behind the knee and attached to the body could also stop the bad movements from happening. I think a flamingo does have its knees backwards compared to us humanoids...
